Their Descendants
Children of David & Catherine.

David & Catherine have probably moved from Portknockie to Banff in 1874, as their eldest son Alexander was born in Portknockie 1873, and their next child George (my grandfather) was born in Banff in 1875. Rumours say the family split up because of a quarrel or disagreement. Three children from David's first marriage with Catherine Wood (David, Catherine & James) also lived with the family until they reached adult age.

Alexander Gault was born on the 29th of July 1873 at Portknockie. He married Helen Cormack on the 30th of November 1900 at St. Andrew's Hall in Banff. He was a fisherman by trade and had just turned 27. Helen, a fisherman's daughter was 24. Between the years 1901 and 1908 Helen gave birth to 4 children – three boys and a girl. Place of residence was first at 47 St. Catherine Street, but around 1904 they moved to 7 Fountain Street in Banff. Alexander died on the 8th of July 1948 at Hillhead, Hillside at the age of 74. Cause of death was senile decay, cerebral thrombosis. Helen died on the 5th of September 1962 at Chalmers Hospital in Banff.

George Gault (my grandfather) was born on the 7th of April 1875 at 3 Painted Effie in Banff. He married my grandmother Margaret Jane (Maggie) Goodbrand on the 18th of December 1906 at Whitehills. George was 31 and Maggie 25. Like his elder brother Alexander, George was a fisherman. Between the years 1908 and 1919 Maggie gave birth to 4 children - three boys and a girl. My mother Jessie was the youngest and the only girl (see my mothers story). Maggie died tragically on the 10th of October 1923 at Chalmers Hospital in Banff. George (Doddie) died in 1952 at the age of 77.

William Gault was born on the 14th of April 1877 at 3 Fountain Street in Banff. He married Annie Wood on the 7th of September 1906 at 129 Union Street in Aberdeen. William was 29 and Annie 21. William was a fisherman. Between the years 1906 and 1918 Annie gave birth to 7 children - 3 boys and 4 girls. William died on the 24th of October 1950 at 8 Campbell Street in Banff. He reached the age of 73. Cause of death was hypertension, cerebral haemorrhage. Annie died on the 1st of April 1963 aged 77.

John Gault was born on the 3rd of April 1880 at 3 Fountain Street in Banff. He married Mary Ann Clubb on the 17th of November 1903 at St. Margarets Church in Aberdeen. John was 22 and Mary Ann 21. Both worked in the fisheries. Mary Ann gave birth to 7 children between the years 1904 and 1925 – 4 boys and 3 girls. The family settled down in Aberdeen. John died on the 12th of April 1958 at Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen. He was 78 years old. Cause of death was carcinoma of colon, hemicolectomy. Mary Ann died on the 7th of April 1961 at Woodened Hospital at the age of 78. Cause of death was generalised arterio sclerosis, arterio sclerotic heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, broncho pneumonia.

Joan Gault was born on the 17th of December 1881 at 3 Fountain Street in Banff. She married Andrew James McKay - a fisherman from Macduff - on the 19th of December 1907 at Alexandra Café, Market Street in Aberdeen. Joan was 25 and Andrew 27. They settled down in Macduff, where Joan gave birth to 2 girls - Elsie (1908) and Catherine (1912). Andrew died on the 12th of August 1912 at 13 Buchan Street, Macduff at the age of 31. His youngest daughter Catherine was thus only 6 months old when he suddenly died from chronic mitral disease and cardiac failure. Joan had to bring up her two girls alone. Joan died on the 22nd of July 1929 at Chalmers Hospital in Banff only 47 years old. Cause of death was general peritonitis, intestinal obstruction.

Margaret Wright Gault was born on the 15th of October 1883 at 2 Fountain Street in Banff (the family had moved across the street). She was the twin sister of Frank, but sadly she died only 3 years of age on the 11th of September 1886. She had since birth been suffering from scrofula general and caries bone of feet and hands.

Frank Gault was Joan's twin brother. He was married twice. His first marriage was to Maggie Watt McKay on the 6th of December 1911 at 31 Crook O’Ness Street in Macduff. Frank was 28 and Maggie 26. The couple settled down at 3 Wood Street in Banff, where Maggie gave birth to 2 girls - Joan (Nan) (1912) and Margaret (Rita) (1914). Sadly she died only two years later, on the 15th of February 1916 from tuberculosis. Frank married Maggie Masson Sutherland the year after - on the 30th of November 1917 at the Christian Institute in Portsoy, where they settled down at 27 Low Street. Maggie gave birth to 3 children - Frank (1918), Isabella (Bella) (1920) and Alexander (1922). By the birth of Isabella they had moved to Banff, and settled down at 77 St. Catherine Street. Frank died on the 3rd of March 1938 at 73 Schoolhendry Street in Portsoy. He was only 54 years of age, and the cause of death was cerebral haemorrhage, arterio sclerosis. Maggie remarried after Frank's death. Her second husband was a mason named John Meldrum. Maggie died on the 3rd of March 1976 at Chalmers Hospital in Banff at the age of 77. Cause of death was cardiac failure, multiple myeloma. Informant was her grandson Graham, living at 43 St. Catherine Street in Banff. Frank’s children were among my mother’s closest friends. She visited Nan and Bella whenever she was in Scotland.

Jessie (Janet) Galt was born on the 2nd of June 1886 at 3 Fountain Street in Banff. She married Thomas Watt - a cooper (journeyman) - on the 31st of January 1907 at Viewfield House, Grattan Place in Fraserburgh. Thomas was 24 and Jessie 20. Jessie and Thomas moved to Australia where they had two children - Thomas and Margaret. Jessie was one of my mother's favourite aunts. They corresponded a lot, and when I was born aunt Jessie sent my mother parcels with beautiful baby clothes.

Grandchildren of David & Catherine.

David & Catherine (Mair) had 31 grandchildren - 27 of them bearing the surname Gault, 2 bearing the surname Watt, and 2 bearing the surname McKay. In addition David had 4 children (reaching adult age) from his first marriage with Catherine Wood, each of them producing many grandchildren. Thomas Gault (1863 - 1935) had 12 children with Margaret Milne (1863 - 1945), and his brother David Gault (1866 - 1939) had 9 children with Jessie Wilson Thom (1870 - 1954). Their two youngest children, Catherine and James, also married, but I have not yet tracked down their descendants. Speaking for David alone, he must at least have had 50 grandchildren, probably the figure is closer to 60! They sure were productive in these days!

To trace further descendants I refer to this PDF-file. To open this file you need a program called Acrobat Reader, which can be downloaded for free from the Internett. After printing out the familytree, it will look very confusing and difficult to read. What you do is to cut the pages at the bottom at the end of the heavy black lines, and attach this page to the following (so the lines fit). It will then become a roll, and it will be easier to trace the different generations by following the right line. Some of the latest generations will still be incomplete, but I am working on it! Good luck!
