Their Ancestors
The parents of John Goodbrand (1)

Alexander Goodbrand married Janet Murray, the daughter of George Murray and Janet Ross, in Fordyce on the 22nd of October 1836. My Great Grandfather John was their firstborn (1838). Alexander was a whitefisher, and he and his wife Janet settled down in the Seatown of Cullen. They had 6 more children:

James, born on the 11th of July 1841
Alexander, born on the 17th of February 1844
Ann, born on the 28th of June 1846
William, born on the 12th of November 1848
Elspet, born on the 10th of July 1851
George, born on the 20th of October 1853

Alexander must have died sometime between 1854 and 1861, because in the 1861 Census of Cullen, Janet appears as a widow and head of house. She is now aged 42, works as a fishwife, and lives in only one room at 125 Seatown with her four boys and two girls.

Thirty years later (1891) Janet, at the age of 72, lived together with her daughter Ann (44) and her son-in-law James Lawrence (46) in the Seatown of Whitehills. The family of 11 people now occupied 3 rooms. One of Ann's and James' daughters, Ann (17) was born blind. Their youngest son, Alexander, was only 9 months old.

Janet died on the 13th of October 1903 at the age of 83. Cause of death was carcinoma, from which she had suffered the last 7 years of her life. Her grandson Henry Lawrence signed the death certificate.

Ancestors of John Goodbrand (1)

John's grandfather (Alexanders father) John Goodbrand (2) married Elspet Wilson in Portknockie on the 28th of January 1803. They settled down in Portknockie. Between the years 1804 and 1823, Elspet gave birth to 11 children, 5 boys and 6 girls. Alexander was number 7 in the row.

John Goodbrand (2) was born on the 27th of June 1784 in Portknockie. He was the son of John Goodbrand (3) (born on the 4th of July 1756) and Margaret Whyntie. John and Margaret married in Portknockie on the 30th of December 1780. They raised 8 children between 1782 and 1799. It is interesting to notice that the lastborn girl Margaret was illegitimate, and in the records her father is "farmer in Portknockie". John Goodbrand's (3) parents were James Goodbrand and Isobel Geddes. They married on the 6th of February 1750 in Cullen. John had a sister Janet (born on the 12th of November 1750) and a brother Andrew (born on the 11th of October 1758). James died on the 22nd of November 1770 at the age of 77, and thus must have been born around 1693.
